What a delight to find such divine work in this unique and nearly extinct art - Terre Mêlée is the art of combining stamped clays that are colored with oxides. This technique dates back to the 18th century and the dinner plate's final look is the result of many hours of highly skilled work.
Clays are prepared slowly for no more than 3 to 4 plates at a time. Once moulded in their respective shapes, the clay is thinned by scraping, sanded at length before two rounds of firing with a transparent glaze. When complete, the results are these remarkable wonders of earth and fire. Listing is for an individual octagonal dinner plate.
